1. Announcement

IPv4 Address Renumbering for HKIX Public Peering LAN: 12-15 Jun 2015 HKT (Fri-Mon)

Dear HKIX Participants,

This year is the 20th Anniversary of HKIX, which was set up in 1995.  HKIX has experienced steady growth during the last 20 years.  To cope with the growth, a lot of changes and upgrades had been done already.  For the IPv4 address block currently used for HKIX Public Peering LAN (202.40.160/23), we have already used up more than 80%.  In order to cope with the continuous growth of HKIX and having learnt from the experience of other IXPs around the world, we have decided to perform IPv4 address renumbering for HKIX Public Peering LAN during 12-15 Jun 2015 HKT.  This is the only option for solving the problem while minimizing the impact to the HKIX community.

A NEW IPv4 address block will be used and the network mask of HKIX public peering LAN will be changed from /23 to /21.  All HKIX participants will have to re-configure the IPv4 addresses on their routers in order to use the new IPv4 addresses to do peering over HKIX.

During the 4-day migration (12-15 Jun 2015 HKT), HKIX will do parallel-run of both new and old IPv4 address blocks.  HKIX new route servers will serve the multilateral peering for new address block while the existing route servers will serve the multilateral peering for old address block.  HKIX participants can change their peering IPs at any time during the 4-day migration period and the old HKIX route servers and the old IPv4 address block 202.40.160/23 will cease operations right after completion of the IPv4 address renumbering on 15 Jun 2015 HKT.
Pre-announcement of this migration was made during APRICOT-APAN 2015 held in Fukuoka last week at “Peering Forum (2)” and “Lightning Talks” sessions.  Please refer to the following links:

3. Route Server Upgrade and New IPv4 Address Migration

RS Migration

4. IPv4 Peering LAN Address

CURRENT IP NEW IP
202.40.160.X /23 123.255.90.X /21
202.40.161.X /23 123.255.91.X /21

Both IPv4 address and subnet mask for HKIX Peering LAN will be changed. The first 3 octects of IPv4 address in 202.40.160 and 202.40.161 will be replaced by 123.255.90 and 123.255.91 respectively. The subnet mask will also be changed from /23 to /21.

For example, if your current IPv4 address is 202.40.160.123/23, then your NEW address will be 123.255.90.123/21. If your current IPv4 address is 202.40.161.123/23, then your NEW address will be 123.255.91.123/21.

6. FAQ

Q: What is my assigned IPv4 peering address in NEW /21 of HKIX public peering LAN?
A: HKIX has released the mapping of Old and New address in May of 2015. Please refer to section 4 of this page for details.

Q: What is the IPv4 address of HKIX new route server in NEW /21 of HKIX public peering LAN?
A: The new IPv4 address of RS1 route server is 123.255.88.1 and RS2 route server is 123.255.88.2..

Q: Will my IPv6 HKIX peering IP address change?
A: No, HKIX IPv6 Peering subnet is still be 2001:7FA:0:1::/64. Please keep your IPv6 configuration unchanged.

Q: When should I re-configure my routing interface of HKIX Peering IPv4 address from /23 to new assigned one in /21?
A: HKIX new route servers serving multilateral peering for new address block of /21 will be ready at 0001 HKT (UTC +8) on 12 June 2015 (Fri), thus you can start to re-configure your routing interface afterwards. HKIX highly recommend ALL participants to schedule the IPv4 renumbering at 0400 - 0800 HKT (UTC +8) on 14 June 2015 (Sun) if possible.

Q: Should I use secondary IPv4 address as 202.40.160.0/23?
A: If your network equipment supports secondary IPv4 address, it is suggested the primary IPv4 address should be the NEW assigned /21 address while the secondary IPv4 address should be the current IP address in /23. You can establish the BGP sessions with HKIX participants in NEW /21 and maintain the bi-lateral peering(s) with those HKIX participant(s) in /23. However, you MUST remove the secondary IPv4 address on your routing interface after 15 June 2015 because 202.40.160.0/23 will no longer exist on HKIX network.

Q: How about my Bi-lateral peering(s) with those HKIX participant(s) in old IPv4 address blocks after my re-configuration task is done?
A: Please directly contact the participants concerned to ask them re-configuring the routing interface with NEW /21 address. You may find contacts of some participants on http://www.peeringdb.com.

Q: What should I do before and while renumbering?
A:

  • •Shut down all BGP peering sessions (multi-lateral peering sessions with HKIX route servers, and any bilateral peering sessions with other HKIX participants) in 202.40.160.0/23. Before proceeding to next step, wait for 3 min for the decreasing of data traffic so as NOT to have data frames from other HKIX participants destining for the existing router interface.
  • Shut down your interface before renumbering
  • Renumber your primary IPv4 address with the new assigned /21 address
  • Configure your current IPv4 address of 202.40.160.0/23 as secondary IP address if your network equipment supported
  • Disable Proxy ARP completely
  • Ensure subnet mask of new primary IPv4 address set as /21, subnet mask of secondary IPv4 address set as /23 for 202.40.160.0/23
  • Configure new BGP sessions for HKIX new route servers and other peer(s) in NEW /21
  • Ensure you do NOT advertise the HKIX network of NEW /21 & 202.40.160.0/23 & 2001:7FA:0:1::/64  to any peers. Please check route filters on your side to ensure it.
  • Bring up your interface

Q: How about my BGP password?
A: If you have BGP password implemented, it should be the same for the peering with new RS1 and RS2 in 123.255.88.0/21.  If you have lost your password, please contact HKIX to retrieve your BGP password.

Q: Can I keep my HKIX IPv4 peering address of 202.40.160.0/23?
A: No, 202.40.160.0/23 will be returned by HKIX and thus please remove all your configuration related to 202.40.160.0/23 after 0001 HKT (UTC +8) on 16 June 2015.

Q: What is the new next-hop IPv4 address in 123.255.88.0/21 of DDoS Mitigation Trial?
A: It is 123.255.90.66.
